UP Rural HS 1983 "Graduation Song Feud"

I distinctly remember having this feud in our graduating class going into our Commencement Exercises about which song they should play when we march to the stage.

I remember that this heated feud went down gender lines, the boys, ever the rebels without a cause (and we are soooooo dating ourselves here) wanted Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" while the girls wanted the theme to "Chariots of Fire." And I think the girls won, right?

Well, I thought we should revisit this feud and decide, once and for all, which song should have been played that fateful?

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, I present to you,

Billy Jean by Michael Jackson (Go ahead, sing along, you MJ-wannabe, you. I even post the lyrics
down below.

The lyrics to Billy Jean by Michael Jackson

She was more like a beauty queen from a movie screen
I said, don't mind, but what do you mean I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round

She told me her name was Billy Jean as she caused a scene
And every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who would dance on the floor in the round

People always told me
Be careful what you do
Don't go around breaking young girls' hearts

And mama always told me
Be careful who you love
Be careful what you do
Because a lie becomes the truth

Billy Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who
says that I am the one
But the kid is not my son

She says that I am the one
But the kid is not my son

For forty days and for forty nights
The law was on her side
But who could stand when she's in demand
With her schemes and plans
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round

So take my strong advice
Just remember to always think twice
(Do think twice)

She told my baby we danced 'til three
Then she looked at me
And showed a photo of my baby crying
His eyes were like mine
So we danced on the floor in the round

People always told me
Be careful what you do
Don't go around breaking young girls' hearts

But she came and stood right by me
I could smell her sweet perfume
I guess it happened way too soon
She called me to her room

Billy Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who
Claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son

Billy Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who
Says that I am the one
But the kid is not my son

She says I am the one
But the kid is not my son

Billy Jean is not my lover (x15)
